Orangutan Scientific Research
There has been quite a bit of research regarding orangutans. These intelligent and fun apes definitely have appeal for scientists as well as for those that belong to the general public. Orangutans have often been regarded as one of the most intelligent creatures in the world. The more research that is done on them, the more that statement seems to hold true for them.
Yet there seems to be continual questions that come up as well when such research is done. Many people don’t think it is right for humanized testing to be done on them to gauge their intelligence. Others feel it is a great way for us to fully see the potential of these animals.
The term Primatologist refers to someone that has an extensive background when it comes to the study of apes. They often have volunteered in zoos and other settings as they continued to learn information about them. Many colleges have programs that specialize in the area of Primatology as well. If you have a passion for these types of animals including the orangutan then you may find it something suited for you. The research these individuals do offer us a way to learn so much about these animals.
A great deal of research has been done in regards to the intelligence of orangutans. Many will claim that they are the smartest of all animals out there. In 2008 it was determined that two orangutans in a zoo were able to fully understand the concept of weighted reciprocation. This involves understanding the value of giving gifts that are equal or that are beneficial. This is the first time that any animal has been evaluated to have such a high level of learning.
Other research for orangutans though goes to the very beginning. They are interested in finding out more about the evolution process. They want to connect all of the dots about the early orangutans and how they came to be as we know them today. There are fossils that have been found or these animals. That has helped with a great deal of the research.
While we can learn plenty from orangutans that are in captivity, the best information comes from observing them in the wild. That is often difficult though due to the fact that they live in the trees, often many feet above the ground. They also live in the thick forests where they are well hidden. Thanks to technology though there is some great footage with them and it didn’t involve disturbing them at all.
From the various types of research that have been conducted, we have been able to make better habitats for them in captivity. We understand their need for solitude, to move around, and to consume a variety of foods including plenty of sweet fruits. It is also known that they are highly susceptible to various types of human diseases so we need to be careful not to spread them to these animals.
Due to the ongoing orangutan research though we are also able to realize the drastically low numbers of them remaining out there. It has brought attention to the eyes of government officials as well as conservation groups. Hopefully this research will help with the fight to prevent them from complete extinction.
It does take a great deal of time though to complete various aspects of orangutan research. Time is something we don’t have very much left of when it comes to the future for these animals. There are many theories about how to help them and hopefully the right choices will be made.
